theater
The main goal of the HCIS theater program is for it to function more like a college department, rather than one in a high school.
To that end: ·Our new $600,000 theater provides opportunities to teach and learn lighting, set design, and other technical aspects of the craft. ·Script choices are challenging and chewy, not sentimental and fluffy---instead of The Odd Couple, it's all about Antigone, The Women of Lockerbie, Greek-based competitive one-act works, and special productions to commemorate World AIDS Day. ·Students get to learn acting through making their own choices in roles that require depth and characterization. ·Teachers operate under the philosophy that, "If you assume students can do something, they'll usually find a way to do just that." ·Student assistant directors earn credits and occasionally teach classes related to productions' content. ·Teacher-directors often ask students, "What do you think we should do?" ·Students in Reader's Theater elective develop scripts for performance, then take their show to local elementary schools. ·Classes in dialect, directing, play writing, theater history, acting, and other topics are offered.
