Service Learning

At Harbor City International School students are engaged in service learning projects. Service learning is an educational strategy that takes service a step further than community service or volunteerism. In a true service learning experience, curricular learning objectives are linked with a service experience while meeting a real need in the community. Before, during, and after a service experience students are involved in research, discussion, and reflection activities under the guidance of Harbor City International School faculty.

Students at Harbor City International School are required to complete 20 hours of service learning each year.

Student service projects have focused on a variety of things, from students working as after school mentors, building homes for Habitat for Humanity in Seattle, WA and Mobile, AL, assisting teachers at North Shore Elementary Charter School, volunteering at Benedictine Health Center, and planning a community-wide AIDS Awareness Event. Many seniors also tie a service-learning component into their Senior Projects.
