HCIS language arts teachers love words and their power for helping kids make sense of the world.

The HCIS language arts curriculum is based on improving composition, grammar and punctuation skills. However, HCIS teachers also acknowledge the perpetual challenge of balancing the curriculum students need — learning about and developing skills for effective language use — with the value of letting students make choices on their own passions, interests and creativity. Therefore, through elective course like Creative Writing, Nature Writing, and Literature of Self-Exploration, students are encouraged to understand their own lives and the lives of others through literary expression and interpretation.
