Scholarships

Greetings Harbor City families. Over the months of November – April, Seniors should be looking into and applying for scholarships. We've done some digging and hopefully have saved you some time with the information below.

Usually one wants to attack the scholarship beast in a strategic fashion, as it can be very time consuming and overwhelming. The strategy we recommend entails a 4 front or steps system.

1. Scholarships available through the college(s) you are applying at. Each college/university usually has at least a few scholarships that are available school wide, based usually on merit, performance or association to a group or organization. Usually, you can find these school scholarships on their website. Three types are: Academic, Athletic & Talent

2. Scholarships available through the specific program you are entering at a given college(s). Often certain programs (Ex. Mechanical Engineering) at universities/colleges provide scholarships. These are almost always merit based but not exclusively.

3. Scholarships available locally. We are very fortunate to have many local groups that provide post-secondary scholarships to our Duluth/Superior area students.

The lion's share of local scholarship available is found through the..

Duluth Superior Community Foundation

DSA Community Foundation

If you click on 'Scholarships', then on 'Scholarship Funds', it will show you a chart of the scholarships available through their foundation.

Some other great local scholarship organizations are the..

Marshal H. and Nellie Alworth Memorial Fund

Alworth Scholarship

Northland Scholarship Services

Soneson Scholarship Fund

4. Scholarships available at the state & national level. There are literally thousands of scholarships available at the state and national levels. One fast, free way to sift through them is to use a scholarship search engine. One that is commonly used by students all over the nation is FASTWEB www.fastweb.com. Simply go to the website and register and complete the personalized matching of scholarships to your unique profile. Typically this is the most difficult research as there are so many scholarships out there. However, with some concentrated effort one can usually find something.
