Freshmen:
- Grades!!! You need to establish a disciplined academic & professional work ethic. This is the most vital academic year because of this. What you do in 9th grade academically effects your post-secondary possibilities.
- Attend local college fair (with school or parents) or begin to visit colleges of *interest.
- Be actively exploring career interests & possibilities and begin constructing a Post-High School Plan.
- Join clubs in and out of school. Explore activities that offer you an opportunity to develop leadership skills.
- Keep track of these activities, keeping in mind colleges are attracted to “well-rounded” individuals.
- Learn the expectations of your school community so behavior issues won't impede your college admission (which they can). Learn how to be a 'professional' (Respect, Responsibility, Relationship, Reach).
- If interested in student exchange, start looking at the process now.
- If a first generation college student (meaning no one else in your family has attended college you qualify for Upward Bound – An organization run through college campuses (Ex. College of St. Scholastica, UMD, UWS)
Sophomores:
- Take PLAN (performance indicator & career interest survey) test which you will be doing as a grade in November. Optional: Take the PSAT as a practice for 11th grade.
- Remain active in and outside of school (within a reasonable amount).
- Attend Local & National College Fairs, visit college websites and visit colleges when able (Relationship).
- Continue your 'professional' skills development (4 Rs).
- Improve on your Post-High School Plan (Responsible).
- When you registering for classes be sure your schedule is rigorous (Reach).
Juniors:
- Take the PLAN test which you will be doing as a grade in November for comparative assessment.
- Take the PSAT in the Fall. You can sign up through the guidance office. By taking the test you are given an idea on where you need to grow academically or possibly qualify for scholarships.
- Remain active in and outside of school within a reasonable amount – not to impede academic success. Look at Junior Rotarian, Student Forum or any outside leadership type groups.
- Register for and take the ACT and the SAT. Register online at www.actstudent. Register online at www.collegeboard.com
- Attend Local & National College Fair, visit college websites and visit colleges when able (Relationship).
- Start Investigating colleges .
- Continue your 'professional' skills development (4 Rs).
- Improve on your Post-Secondary Plan (Responsible).
- When you registering for classes be sure your schedule is rigorous (Reach).
- If the military, Ameri-Corps or any other non-traditional post-secondary experience is in your Post-Secondary Plan start the application process NOW.
- Start making Post-Secondary Academic Resume including activities, volunteer experience, honors, awards, certifications, leadership roles, etc.
- Begin work on a college essay and/or autobiographical essay (early drafts).
- Think about PSEO - to take college courses at local colleges or CIS - College classes right here at HCIS.
- When registering for Senior schedule continue a rigorous course of study.
- Plan for a summer internship / work experience before Senior year and/or physically visit at least two college campuses during this summer.
- Make a 'colleges of choice' list pick 6. Pick two that are a stretch (Reach), two that are middle and two that are safeties (colleges you know you will get into).
Seniors:
- If you have not yet or you would like to retake the ACT you should register by September 21st and be taking the test on October 27th.
- Remain active in and outside of school within a reasonable amount – not to impede academic success. Consider Junior Rotarian, Student Forum or any outside leadership type groups.
- Attend Local & National College Fair, visit college websites and visit colleges when able (Relationship).
- Request recommendations from those well acquainted with you, when the year begins. (Ex. Teachers, administrators, employers, organization supervisors, etc)
- Review your 'colleges of choice list' and narrow it down to three-to-six, 1-2 stretch, 1-2 middle and 1-2 safeties.
- Start applying to schools for early decision (which is becoming final decision at many schools) by November (Thanksgiving). Applying to post-secondary school is a HCIS requirement.
- Continue your 'professional' skills development (4 Rs).
- Improve on your Post-Secondary Plan (Responsible).
- Do the best you can on your Senior project. It is important. And, you may be able to share them with a college during an interview someday.
- Review your transcript & credits with your Base Camp advisers and/or counselor
- Go online to www.fafsa.ed.gov and fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. PARENTS: Get your taxes done ASAP after January 31st
